Chief coach of Russian football team to be appointed on August 11

The next meeting of the Russian Football Union’s executive board will decide on a new chief coach

MOSCOW, August 8. /TASS/. A chief coach of Russia’s national football team will be appointed at a meeting of the Russian Football Union’s (RFU) executive board on August 11, RFU First Vice President Nikita Simonyan said on Monday.

The RFU executive board’s bureau held a meeting earlier in the day.

"Today, we held a regular meeting of the RFU executive board’s bureau. The president of the organization, Vitaly Mutko, told the participants about his conversations with the candidates for head coach of the Russian national team and laid bare his vision of the situation. All members of the bureau also voiced their opinions on that matter. As a result, we have preliminarily appointed a meeting of the RFU executive board on August 11 where we plan to appoint a new chief coach of the Russian team," FRU’s press service quoted Simonyan as saying.

The position of the head coach of Russia’s national football team has been vacant since June when playing in Group B at the Euro Cup Russia lost its encounters with Slovakia and Wales (1-2 and 0-3 respectively), thus failing to qualify to the next round of Last 16. Ex-Head Coach Leonid Slutsky told a news conference after the match with Wales that someone else should take his place at the helm of the national squad.

It was announced earlier that candidates for the head coach of the Russian football team are Kurban Berdyev, Alexander Borodyuk, Sergei Semak and Stanislav Cherchesov.
