MOSCOW, February 13. /TASS/. Russian tennis star Lyudmila Samsonova has said that she dreams of one day topping the WTA (the Women Tennis Association) rankings, but her immediate goal is to be in the top ten, she said in a commentary provided to TASS earlier in the day by the WTA’s press office.

According to the newly-published WTA Rankings on Monday, Samsonova climbed four spots. Playing last week at the 2023 WTA Abu Dhabi Open tennis tournament, the Russian player reached the final, where she lost to Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic in three sets: 6-1; 6-7 (8-10); 4-6.

"I hope that I will be in the top someday, but I’m very happy," Samsonova said following her match against Bencic, adding that "I think the first goal [is to enter the WTA’s] Top 10."

Samsonova, 24, is currently ranked 15th in the WTA Rankings list. She is the winner of four WTA tournaments. Her best result playing in the Grand Slam series is the 4th round at Wimbledon in 2021 and the 2022 US Open. As part of the Russian national team, she is the winner of the 2021 Billie Jean King Cup.

Russian, Belarusian players’ neutral status at tennis tournaments

On February 28, 2022, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) issued recommendations to international sports federations to bar athletes from Russia and Belarus from taking part in international tournaments, citing Moscow’s special military operation in Ukraine as the reason.

Following the IOC’s recommendations in late February last year, the majority of global sports federations decided to bar athletes from Russia and Belarus from all international sports tournaments.

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) ruled on March 1, 2022 to suspend the membership of the Russian and Belarusian national tennis federations and also canceled all previously scheduled tennis tournaments in these countries.

On March 14, 2022, the ITF also confirmed its ban on the Russian and Belarusian national tennis teams from taking part in the 2022 Davis Cup and 2022 Billie Jean King Cup.

The Women Tennis Association (WTA) and the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) allowed tennis players from Russia and Belarus to continue participating in WTA and ATP tournaments, but under a neutral status.
