Trump empowers Justice Department agents to deport illegal migrants — WSJ

The newspaper noted that DEA and ATF employees had not been involved in immigration enforcement, except where there are gun-related or drug-trafficking crimes

NEW YORK, January 23. /TASS/. The administration of the new US president, Donald Trump, has granted agents of the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the US Marshals Service power to deport illegal migrants, The Wall Street Journal reported.

According to a memo from acting Homeland Security Secretary Benjamine Huffman, seen by the newspaper, the Trump administration is planning for the Justice Department to cooperate by lending some agents to assist with Trump’s deportation campaign. As reported by the WSJ on Wednesday, agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) already possess immigration-arresting powers, Huffman specified in his memo.

The newspaper noted that DEA and ATF employees had not been involved in immigration enforcement, except where there are gun-related or drug-trafficking crimes. And the US Marshals Service may traditionally be involved in those immigration-related cases that overlap with federal fugitives, the WSJ specified.

Meanwhile, the Pentagon may provide military aircraft to support deportation flights of over 5,000 undocumented migrants, acting Defense Secretary Robert Salesses said in a statement.
