Death toll from Taiwan earthquake rises to 12

HONG KONG, April 5. /TASS/. The number of people killed in an earthquake that hit Taiwan on Wednesday has risen to 12, the China Times media outlet reported, citing the Taiwanese fire department.

The number of those injured has grown to 1,113.

According to the latest data, 659 people are waiting for help in hard-to-reach areas and 11 are still missing.

The strongest earthquake in 25 years hit Taiwan on the morning of April 3. The magnitude 7.2 quake, recorded in Hualien County, was felt all across the island. According to seismologists, the epicenter was off the east coast of Taiwan, 25 kilometers southeast of Hualien City, and had a depth of 15.5 kilometers. Tremors were also felt in the provinces of Fujian and Jiangxi in eastern China. Over 500 aftershocks were recorded as of Friday morning.
