Russian Emergencies Ministry airlifts 35 tons of relief aid to Iran

The Emergencies Ministry added that the cargo contained sugar, flour, cooking oil, tents, warm blankets, stoves and a portable power station

MOSCOW, February 8. /TASS/. An IL-76 aircraft from the Russian Emergencies Ministry has delivered 35 tons of humanitarian aid to Iran, which was hit by an earthquake on January 28, the ministry told TASS on Wednesday.

"An IL-76 aircraft belonging to the Russian Emergencies Ministry has delivered humanitarian aid to the Islamic Republic of Iran. Following the Russian government’s order, a 35-ton humanitarian cargo was airlifted to the city of Urmia. It consists of daily essentials for the citizens affected by the devastating earthquake that hit the country’s northwest on January 28," the press service said.

The Emergencies Ministry added that the cargo contained sugar, flour, cooking oil, tents, warm blankets, stoves and a portable power station. Russian Deputy Emergencies Minister Ilya Denisov handed over the consignment, pointing out that Russian rescue workers would always come to help a friendly people struck by a natural disaster.

On Wednesday morning, the Russian Emergencies Ministry said that its special flight had departed from Moscow’s Zhukovsky Airport carrying relief aid for Iran.

The 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck Iran in late January. The epicenter of the quake lay at a depth of 43 kilometers and was located 23 kilometers southeast of Khoy, which has a population of 175,000 people. A total of 1,167 casualties were reported.
