Food crisis may worsen in the world in near future, Putin says

The Russian President stressed that problems such as poverty, high unemployment and lack of adequate medical care "are acutely recognized by lagging countries that are losing faith in the prospect of catching up with the leaders"

SOCHI, October 21. /TASS/. The food crisis that occurs periodically in individual states and entire regions may grow in the near future and reach extreme forms, Russian President Vladimir Putin said at a plenary session of the Valdai International Discussion Club.

"Food crisis periodically occurs in individual states and even entire regions. There is every reason to believe that this crisis will worsen in the near future and may reach extreme forms," Putin said.

The Russian President stressed that problems such as poverty, high unemployment and lack of adequate medical care "are acutely recognized by lagging countries that are losing faith in the prospect of catching up with the leaders."

This frustration sparks aggression and pushes people into the ranks of extremists, the President said.

"People in those countries have a growing sense of unfulfilled expectations and a sense of the absence of any life prospects not only for themselves, but also for their children," Putin said. All this prompts the people in those states to look for a better life, causes uncontrollable migration and creates preconditions for social discontent in already more prosperous states, he added.
