UNGA president slams 'unacceptable' vaccination rate among developing countries

UNITED NATIONS, October 21. / TASS /. The current level of COVID-19 vaccination in developing countries, which stands at 2-3%, is unacceptable, and the global community is capable of being fully immunized by late 2022, President of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly Abdulla Shahid told TASS on Wednesday.

"We know that only 2-3% population of developing countries are vaccinated. This is especially true for Africa. This is unacceptable, this should not be," the UNGA president said.

Shahid also believes that "the international community, all 193 countries, have the capacity to [immunize] the entire world by the end of 2022." The UNGA president noted that he planned to hold a high-level event in order to convey this message to all UN member countries.

In early October, WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that at least 11 bln COVID-19 vaccine doses would be required to inoculate 70% of the world’s population. According to the WHO strategy, this result is likely to be achieved by mid-2022, and by the end of this year, at least 40% of the population are planned to be immunized.
