Legislators support amendments stipulating prison term for dishonoring war veterans

The liability proposed is already in place for justification of Nazism and envisages a prison term of up to five years and a fine of about $68,000

MOSCOW, February 24. /TASS/. Deputies from all factions of the State Duma (lower house of parliament) on Wednesday submitted amendments to the relevant Committee on State Building and Legislation, that envisage liability for public dissemination of knowingly false information about veterans of the Great Patriotic War (part of WWII that the Soviet Union fought against Nazi Germany) as well as criminal responsibility for denigrating their dignity and honor, Duma Vice Speaker Irina Yarovaya told TASS on Wednesday.

"The liability proposed by the amendments is already in place for justification of Nazism and envisages a prison term of up to five years and a fine of up to five million rubles (about $68,000)," said Yarovaya, one of the authors of the amendments.

"There is a general rule here that the minimum liability is set at two months and, accordingly, 5,000 rubles," she noted. "Representatives from all factions have already supported" the amendments, the lawmaker stressed.
