Russian deputy PM, US envoy discuss climate change issues

Dmitry Chernyshenko noted that since Russia and the United States were among global leaders for carbon emissions, they could effectively cooperate in solving that problem

MOSCOW, July 15. /TASS/. Russia’s carbon emission intensity improved twofold in the past 30 years, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko said at a meeting with US Climate Envoy John Kerry.

The parties discussed ways to reduce carbon emission and boost cooperation in other climate-related fields, an official from the deputy prime minister’s press service told TASS.

"We are among the world’s leaders in this field, particularly as far as the absorptive capacity of Russian forests goes. The Russian economy’s carbon emission intensity has improved twofold since 1990," Chernyshenko pointed out, as cited by his press service.

According to him, expanding the use of renewable energies was one of the most important goals.

Chernyshenko noted that since Russia and the United States were among global leaders for carbon emissions, they could effectively cooperate in solving that problem. In particular, the two countries can cooperate in monitoring forest fires. Russia and the US agreed to work together on the issue.
