MOSCOW, November 19. /TASS/. Moscow will not lift sanctions on US Senator Marco Rubio, who has been nominated for secretary of state by President-elect Donald Trump, as long as Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov remains sanctioned by Washington, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told TASS.
Asked if it was possible to lift sanctions on Rubio as a gesture of goodwill, Peskov said: "Lavrov is also under sanctions. What’s the use of talking of goodwill if Lavrov is sanctioned? This should be a two-way process."
Rubio was put on a Russian sanctions list in May 2022 and on China’s list in August 2020.
Rubio is conservative; on the one hand, he calls for reducing assistance to Ukraine but on the other hand, he describes himself as "anti-communist," criticizing the Cuban and Chinese authorities.
