Putin points to UNHRC’s political bias in Donbass conflict

The international community is screaming for radical changes, the Russian leader said as he called for ensuring a fair approach to the implementation of human rights based on mutual respect, with the cultural and historical peculiarities of countries being taken into account

MOSCOW, November 21. /TASS/. The UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) and other international institutions in the field of human rights have demonstrated their political bias throughout the duration of the conflict in the Donbass republics and Novorossiya, Russian President Vladimir Putin said.

"Unfortunately, throughout the history of the conflict in Donbass and Novorossiya, international institutions which are supposed to guarantee and promote human rights - the UNHRC, the Council of Europe and others - have demonstrated their biased position and inability to do their job," he said, addressing an international conference on the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) underway in Moscow.

"Given their clearly biased stance, Russia was forced to withdraw from these institutions, but it continues to strictly adhere to its human rights commitments," Putin said.

The international community is screaming for radical changes, the Russian leader said as he called for ensuring a fair approach to the implementation of human rights based on mutual respect, with the cultural and historical peculiarities of countries being taken into account.

Also, Putin urged that civic institutions should play a substantial role in achieving this goal.

The address was read out by Valery Fadeyev, head of the Presidential Council on Civil Society and Human Rights.
