Kiev fears growing popular support for idea of peace talks with Moscow — activist

Kyiv fears growing population fatigue from the protracted conflict in the country, said the leader of the movement "We are with Russia" Vladimir Rogov

MELITOPOL, March 11. /TASS/. The Kiev government got used to making profits from the conflict with Russia, and fears that in peacetime it will have to answer for widespread corruption and abuse in Ukraine, the leader of the ‘We Are Together With Russia’ movement, Vladimir Rogov, told TASS on Saturday.

"Peace is the most dangerous thing for the regime [of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky], because in peacetime they will have to answer questions about the high level of corruption, crimes committed according to the principle ‘war will justify everything’ and so on," he said. "That is why military actions remain a necessary condition for Zelensky’s rule. These people do not know what to do in peacetime, the only thing they can do is to sow destruction."

The statement came in response to recent remarks by Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Alexey Danilov, who described the growing popular support for peace talks with Russia among the country’s residents as "a very dangerous trend." Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in that regard that Moscow and Kiev would inevitably come together on a reasonable approach to their relations.

According to Rogov, Kiev fears the population’s growing fatigue over the protracted conflict in the country.

"I think that he [Danilov] wanted to intimidate the people, but it turned out to be an act of recognition of the fact that more and more people want peace. They [the Ukrainian government] know perfectly well that people don’t want to fight, they have grown tired of hostilities and may rise to overthrow the regime at some point," he said, adding that the Kiev authorities "are afraid of social upheaval and discontent.".
