US running program in Central Asia, Caucasus to enhance dangerous pathogens — top brass

It is stressed that the Russian Defense Ministry has repeatedly highlighted potential risks "of dual-purpose programs" that the United States carries out on its soil and outside its territory

MOSCOW, March 10. /TASS/. The Russian Defense Ministry has obtained documents during the special military operation outlining the US systemic work in certain states of Central Asia and the South Caucasus to enhance dangerous pathogens, Chief of Russia’s Radiation, Chemical and Biological Protection Troops Igor Kirillov said on Friday.

"An analysis of the documents, some of which were obtained during the special military operation, shows that such research into enhancing the functions of dangerous pathogens being carried out, in particular, in the countries of Central Asia and South Caucasus, is systemic and major US pharmaceutical companies are involved in its implementation," he told a briefing on the US biological warfare research.

The Russian Defense Ministry has repeatedly highlighted potential risks "of dual-purpose programs" that the United States carries out on its soil and outside its territory, Kirillov stressed. However, in an effort to justify itself, Washington claims that all the work is being carried out in the US national interests and is being done to ensure global biosecurity, he pointed out.

Amid the outbreak of dangerous diseases in various regions of the world, "the work being carried out at Boston University to enhance the pathogenic properties of agents, including COVID-19 (the so-called directed evolution, changes that may or may not take tens or hundreds of years in nature) and create artificial viruses with the enhanced risk of infecting humans look like the culmination of recklessness, the chief of Russia’s radiation, chemical and biological protection troops said.
