'We will fight this': Kremlin on EU freezing its assets

On Thursday, it was reported that the EU is struggling to find and freeze the assets of sanctioned Russian billionaires, with the total figure increasing only modestly in recent months

MOSCOW, March 10. /TASS/. Russia will continue to fight the freezing of its assets by the European Union, as this is an attack on the foundations of the world economy, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Friday.

When asked how the Kremlin feels about the fact that the European Union is still trying to freeze a large part of Russian assets, he replied:

"We do not embrace all this blocking and consider it nothing but a violation of international law and an encroachment on property, on state and private property, in other words, an encroachment on the foundations of the world economy. This is illegitimate, this is illegal. We will fight this."

"Let the Europeans deal with these problems themselves," Peskov added.

On Thursday, Bloomberg reported that the EU is struggling to find and freeze the assets of sanctioned Russian billionaires, with the total figure increasing only modestly in recent months.

According to Bloomberg, the EU has so far frozen 20.9 bln euros ($22 billion) in assets. This is despite the fact that, according to official statistics from the European Commission, in 2019, Russia’s Foreign Direct Investment stock in the EU was estimated at 136 bln euros.
