Russian Security Council’s secretary arrives in Venezuela

Earlier, the secretary of the Russia’s Security Council visited Venezuela in 2008

MOSCOW, February 28. /TASS/. The secretary of Russia’s Security Council, Nikolay Patrushev, currently on a foreign tour, has arrived in Venezuela on a working visit.

The Security Council’s press-service said that in Caracas Patrushev "will hold Russian-Venezuelan consultations on security issues with representatives from government ministries and agencies of the two countries taking part." Earlier, he visited Algeria, where he was received by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

The secretary of Russia’s Security Council stays in touch with counterparts in other countries who are in charge of security matters. He has met more than once with the general secretaries of Venezuela’s National Defense Council, both in the Russian capital and at other venues.

Moscow has repeatedly expressed support for Caracas on various issues. In particular, this was the case in 2019, when the leader of the Venezuelan opposition Juan Guaido declared himself as acting president and on the same day the United States and a number of other countries recognized him as interim head of state. Patrushev at a meeting with his counterpart from Venezuela then called outside interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign state unacceptable, expressed support for the legitimate authorities in Caracas and confirmed Moscow's readiness to help with a dialogue with the opposition.
