Putin’s policy to firmly defend Russia's interests proven effective, says Lavrov

According to the foreign minister, it was no surprise that the majority of countries assumed a balanced position regarding the situation in Ukraine and opted against joining the anti-Russian sanctions

MOSCOW, February 15. /TASS/. President Vladimir Putin’s policy course to vigorously defend Russia’s national interests and pursue equal cooperation has demonstrated its efficiency, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told the State Duma (the nation’s lower house of parliament) on Wednesday.

"Attempts to isolate Russia have failed, and our enemies have to admit that," Lavrov stressed. "The president's foreign policy course of firmly defending our national interests while being open to sweeping equal international cooperation has proven to be effective."

According to the foreign minister, it was no surprise that the majority of countries assumed a balanced position regarding the situation in Ukraine and opted against joining the anti-Russian sanctions.

"In our long-term planning, we consistently proceed from the fact that today's world is multipolar, that the countries of the Asia-Pacific Region, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America, which make up the global majority, do not want to live under a Western-centric order based on rules invented by the West itself, rules that Washington, London and Brussels have created but also change them all the time to suit their interests," Lavrov said.

"That is why it was logical that three-quarters of countries opted against siding with the anti-Russian sanctions, assumed a balanced position regarding the Ukrainian situation, which they justly consider not in a vacuum, but in the context of the long-standing crisis of European security as a whole resulting from NATO’s aggressive course," he added.
