ECHR’s politicized decisions were unacceptable for Russia — Putin

"Bias and partiality, whatever excuses may be presented, are absolutely unacceptable for the judiciary," the president said

NOVO-OGARYOVO, February 14. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin has explained that Russia stopped implementing decisions by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), because they were politicized and biased and for that reason unacceptable.

At a meeting of judges of arbitration and military courts, as well as courts of general jurisdiction on Tuesday, Putin recalled that in March last year Russia withdrew from the Council of Europe, and in September from the jurisdiction of the ECHR. He noted that "the reasons for such a step are obvious."

"Some verdicts of that court were overtly politicized," Putin explained, adding that such politicization had existed for a long time, but "recently it has simply acquired an unacceptable character."

"Bias and partiality, whatever excuses may be presented, are absolutely unacceptable for the judiciary," the president said.

"Therefore, federal laws were adopted to the effect the ECHR’s decisions that entered into force after March 15, 2022, were not enforceable in Russia. Moreover, our procedural legislation has been amended regarding the revision of judicial acts adopted by Russian courts on the basis of ECHR decisions," Putin said. He drew attention to the fact that "provisions stipulating that ECHR decisions were the basis for the revision of judicial acts that have entered into force on new or newly discovered circumstances were excluded from the procedural codes.".
