US undermining European security, says diplomat

MOSCOW, February 1. /TASS/. The United States is undermining the security of both the European continent as a whole and Russia as a country that is an integral part of that continent, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.

"They [Americans], both individually and within their respective military blocs, have been engaged in activities to undermine the security of the European continent as a whole and Russia as an integral part of this continent, and directly against Russia as a country," she said on the air of the Radio Sputnik on Wednesday.

Zakharova also noted that American accusations against Moscow of violating the New START only elicit a "sarcastic smile."

"Such statements from the US side that we’ve talked about, or anyone advocating such a state of affairs, I mean the notion that Russia has allegedly violated the New START Treaty, only arouse a sarcastic smile," the diplomat added.

On Wednesday, Russian Ambassador to the US Anatoly Antonov said that Moscow, unlike Washington, had been fully complying with the New START treaty for years, and the responsibility for the escalation around the pact lies entirely with the United States.
