EU sanctions against Zaporozhye, Kherson Regions seem to recognize them as Russian — MP

It is noted that earlier, the Council of the European Union approved its 8th package of sanctions against Russia

MOSCOW, October 6. /TASS/. The EU’s introduction of sanctions against the Zaporozhye and Kherson Regions looks almost like the recognition of Russia’s sovereignty over these territories, Head of the Russian State Duma Committee on Foreign Affairs Leonid Slutsky said on Thursday.

"The European Union extended its anti-Russian sanctions to the Zaporozhye and Kherson Regions. This almost sounds like the recognition of Russian sovereignty over these territories, albeit with all the might of Brussels’ hypocrisy," he wrote on his Telegram channel.

The lawmaker stressed that the new sanctions would hardly make any difference for the "brave and strong people of the Zaporozhye and Kherson Regions." "Their will won’t be broken. They are home, with Russia. Together we will restore, rebuild and refurbish. Crimea is a good example," he added.

Earlier, the Council of the European Union approved its 8th package of sanctions against Russia. Additionally, the EU decided to expand the restrictions to the Zaporozhye and Kherson Regions that joined Russia. The council’s statement noted that starting on October 6, "the geographical scope of the restrictions introduced on 23 February, including notably the import ban on goods from the non-government controlled areas of the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, will be extended to cover also the non-controlled areas of the oblasts of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson."
