Russian lawmaker dubs Johnson-proposed alliance "a commonwealth of Russophobic nations"

"Prime Minister Johnson’s idea, voiced by the Italian daily Corriere della Sera, to create an alliance of countries opposed to Brussels and Germany’s policies toward Russia may well become true," Konstantin Kosachev noted

MOSCOW, May 27. /TASS/. The idea to create a new alliance as an alternative to the EU, floated by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, may serve a number of objectives, including to form a "commonwealth of Russophobic nations", said Konstantin Kosachev, Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council upper house of parliament.

"Prime Minister Johnson’s idea, voiced by the Italian daily Corriere della Sera, to create an alliance of countries opposed to Brussels and Germany’s policies toward Russia may well become true," Kosachev said in a post on his Telegram channel.

"Anyway, it serves quite a number of London’s objectives:" to give an impression of being a global policy center and to establish a "commonwealth of Russophobic nations", Britain’s old dream, which has apparently failed to be fully materialized in the EU, Kosachev said.

Another objective is to continue driving a wedge between Russia and the EU, and Russia and Germany, according to the lawmaker.

Politicians in the UK are also pursuing their private goals, Kosachev added. Johnson, Foreign Minister Liz Truss, and Defense Minister Ben Walles have taken an advantage of the conflict in Ukraine, "boosting their political capital," The anti-Russian frenzy came in handy for Johnson, as the "Partygate" scandal, the worst crisis of his premiership, broke out in February.

Ironically, Europeans have been taught to fear Moscow for alleged plans "to bury the EU", but real damage has been caused by London and Washington, he noted.

The new alliance would have Britain as its leader and would include Ukraine, Poland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, as well as potentially Turkey at a later date, the Italian newspaper reported citing sources. The British initiative would imply an alliance of countries jealous of their national sovereignty, liberal in economy and determined to counteract Moscow’s policies, according to the paper.
