‘Depravity’: Kremlin castigates desecration of Russian memorials in Europe

According to Dmitry Peskov, Russian diplomats are embroiled in a very complex situation, but they "nevertheless require maximum efforts to counter it and maintain permanent contact with official authorities"

MOSCOW, May 26. /TASS/. The continued desecration of Russian memorials abroad is an act of depravity and diplomats are working hard to counter such developments, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday.

"The Russian Foreign Ministry is engaged in tense daily diplomatic efforts to fight this depravity, which is currently transpiring in a number of European countries," he noted.

According to Peskov, Russian diplomats are embroiled in a very complex situation, but they "nevertheless require maximum efforts to counter it and maintain permanent contact with official authorities."

"All measures, within the framework of diplomatic practice and intergovernmental relations, have been employed," he continued. "There is simply too much depravity, unfortunately," Peskov insisted.

The Austrian Embassy in Moscow reported earlier in the day that an emblem of the Ukrainian nationalist battalion Azov was painted on the wall behind the Soviet War Memorial in Vienna.

More than a week ago, the Russian Embassy in Switzerland sent a note of protest to the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs over the desecration of the memorial dedicated to Russian commander Alexander Suvorov’s associates in Andermatt by unknown individuals.

The diplomatic mission demanded from Switzerland’s Federal Department of Foreign Affairs that the damage be repaired and those responsible identified and punished.
