‘Step in the right direction’: Senator hails move by Apple, Google to ditch Navalny app

According to Andrei Klimov, the commission was informed that Google and Apple had restricted access to the app in their services across Russia by 08:00 am on September 17

MOSCOW, September 17. /TASS/. The removal of the Navalny app from AppStore and Google Play is a step in the right direction, Chairman of the Russian Federation Council (the upper house of parliament) Ad Hoc Commission on Protecting State Sovereignty and Preventing Interference in the Domestic Affairs of the Russian Federation Andrei Klimov told reporters on Friday.

"I must say that it's not the first time that companies such as Google removed malicious content that we view as illegal after receiving warnings, particularly from our commission. We consider the move by Google and Apple as a step in the right direction," he pointed out.

According to Klimov, the commission was informed that Google and Apple had restricted access to the app in their services across Russia by 08:00 am on September 17.

Klimov emphasized that the commission had held a meeting on Thursday, which also involved Google and Apple representatives. "After we held a conversation, I believe that Google and Apple drew the only correct conclusion, which is simple: everyone in Russia must abide by the Russian Constitution and Russian laws," the senator noted.

On August 20, Russia's telecom watchdog demanded that the Navalny app be removed from AppStore and Google Play based on a ruling by the Russian Prosecutor General's Office that access to resources linked to the Anti-Corruption Foundation (designated in Russia as a foreign agent and an extremist organization) should be restricted.
