Russian rescuers pull woman survivor out of rubble in wake of Mandalay quake

The joint operation with Chinese rescuers lasted almost eight hours

MOSCOW, March 31. /TASS/. A team of Russian rescuers have pulled a woman out of the rubble after Friday’s massive earthquake in Mandalay, the Russian Emergency Ministry told TASS.

"Russian rescuers have pulled a woman who has been trapped under piles of concrete for more than 48 hours. She was found alive under the rubble by search dogs from the Russian Emergencies Ministry’s search-dog team on a mission in the city of Mandalay," the ministry specified. The joint operation with Chinese rescuers lasted almost eight hours.

A powerful 8.2-magnitude quake hit Myanmar on March 28, claiming the lives of more than 1,600 people. Thailand also suffered from the natural disaster. Tremors were felt in China and Vietnam.

Russia has dispatched three planes with rescuers, dog handlers, doctors and an airmobile hospital to Myanmar to help eliminate the consequences of the devastating earthquake.

Head of the Russian Emergencies Ministry’s Combined Rescue Team Sergey Vorontsov said earlier that there are still chances to find people alive and rescue them from under the rubble of collapsed buildings in the Southeast Asian country. Russian rescuers will be working round the clock to search for survivors.
