Four settlements in Krasnodar Region face high alert mode due to oil spill

KRASNODAR, December 16. /TASS/. The authorities of the Krasnodar Region have declared a high alert mode in four settlements due to an oil product spill from two tankers, regional Governor Veniamin Kondratiev announced.

"A high alert mode has been introduced in four settlements," he wrote on his Telegram channel.

According to the Emergencies Ministry department in Crimea, the tankers Volgoneft-212 and Volgoneft-239 collided during a storm on December 15. One of the vessels ran aground. The crew was evacuated, but one of the 13 crew members, a 23-year-old native of Astrakhan, lost his life.

Russia's Federal Agency for Sea and Inland Water Transport confirmed that the incident resulted in an oil product spill in the Black Sea.

Investigative authorities have initiated two criminal cases over violations of maritime transport safety rules. Later, one of the cases was reclassified to a more serious charge due to the death of a sailor.

On December 16, the rescue operation resumed, and 14 crew members were evacuated from the second vessel. Russian President Vladimir Putin was briefed on the situation and issued instructions for organizing rescue operations in the Kerch Strait. Meanwhile, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin established a working group to address the consequences of the incident.
