MOSCOW, February 17. /TASS/. In December 2024, Russia took the highest share in the total value of gas imports to the EU since March 2022 at 25% and became the leader ahead of Algeria and the United States, according to Eurostat data and TASS calculations.
Russia became the leader in gas supplies to the EU in December with a share of 25.2%, up from 18.8% in November. This is the maximum since March 2022 (30.2%). In total, the European Union purchased gas from Russia in December for about 1.84 bln euro, 45% more than in the previous month and 41% more than in December 2023.
Algeria came in second with a share of 18.6% and supplies to Europe worth 1.36 bln euro. The United States came in third with its LNG supplies - 15.4% and 1.13 bln euro. Norway was fourth with 13.7% and 1 bln euro. Azerbaijan rounded out the top five with 6.9% and 505 mln euro.
Overall, Russia's share of EU countries' gas imports in 2024 was 19.9% (the third highest among all suppliers), up from 14% a year earlier. Algeria became the leader in gas supplies to the European Union with 21.5%, and the United States came in second (20.5%), while Norway came in fourth (13%).
Under the RePower EU program, the European Union intends to reduce its dependence on Russian oil and gas by two-thirds by the end of 2022 and to zero by the end of 2027.
At the same time, the price of purchasing Russian LNG for the European Union has increased by 150% in three years due to an increase in the price and volume of LNG supplies from Russia.
