SANYA, November 24. /TASS/. The municipal authorities of the Chinese resort Sanya (Hainan Province, South China) outlined plans to strengthen the city's scientific and innovation potential to 2035. This was reported by the Sanya Daily newspaper.
The Sanya City Party Committee held a plenary meeting on October 28 28 to study the results of the 20th CPC National Congress which was held in Beijing.
As the newspaper notes, the key project in this area is the development of the Yazhou Bay Science & Technology City. Since the 18th Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in 2012, Chinese President and General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee Xi Jinping has visited Hainan a total of six times, including two inspection visits to the region by the head of state and the party.
In his speeches, Xi Jinping has repeatedly noted that the Nanfan Scientific and Research Breeding Base located in the Yazhou Science City should become China's new "Silicon Valley" in agriculture, as well as ensure the country's food security.
"Nanfan Scientific and Research Breeding Base is China's valuable agricultural scientific research platform. We should make it an agricultural Silicon Valley, which will combine scientific research, production, commercialization, scientific and technological exchanges, and the transformation of its achievements to serve the whole country," the newspaper quoted Xi Jinping as saying.
Investment
In 2019, capital investment in the YYazhou Bay Science & Technology City reached 5.95 billion yuan, and in 2020, the figure rose 91% year-on-year to 11.35 billion yuan. In 2021, capital investment in Yazhou's fixed assets reached 17.37 billion yuan, achieving an average annual growth rate of 70%.
Overall, by the end of August this year, total investment in fixed assets in Yazhou Science City reached 47.39 billion yuan.
Yazhou Science City
The Yazhou Agricultural Science and Technology Cluster was established in 2019. Its total area is about 70 square kilometers. The agricultural park includes the Nanfan Scientific and Research Breeding Base; so far, scientists have been able to breed more than 20,000 new crop varieties there, which is about 70% of China's national figure.
By the middle of 2022, the number of registered resident companies in the Yazhou Agricultural Park exceeded 7,000. The Nanfan Breeding Research Base employs more than 8,000 specialists from more than 800 leading research institutions in 29 regions of China.
