Russia opposes compulsory restrictions on fossil fuels, top diplomat says

Sergey Lavrov stressed that Russia opposes compulsory restrictions on the use of fossil fuels

YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, October 7. /TASS/. Russia is against compulsory limitations on the use of fossil fuels, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in a video address to an international forum on environmental policies and sustainable development on Friday.

"Russia, together with like-minded people from developing states, continues defending the necessity to observe a balance between efforts on combating climate change on the one hand and the tasks of socio-economic development on the other," he explained. "We oppose compulsory restrictions on the use of fossil fuels, or any discrimination towards any sources of energy, the use of which could facilitate the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions," Lavrov added.

That said, considering the policy of promoting environmentally safe power stations fueled by renewable energy sources that is pursued in Asian-Pacific states, "it seems possible to share Russia’s solutions in this area with them, including the experience of integrating those so-called green stations to the national energy system," the diplomat noted.
