Dividing the world into those who are for and against Russia hurts the economy — IMF chief

"If we go to a point when we cut off parts of the world from each other it would be the poor in rich countries, and it would be the poor countries that would bear the brunt of the impact," Kristalina Georgieva added

WASHINGTON, October 6. /TASS/. The global economy is suffering from the split in the global community to those against Russia and the ones supporting it, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said on Thursday at a seminar at Georgetown University in Washington D.C.

"So what is the most dramatic consequence [of the developments in Ukraine-TASS]? Of course, there are many, many risks, including the risk of spillover from Ukraine to other countries. But the most dramatic consequence really is breaking the world into blocs; one with Russia, one against Russia, and one that is sitting on the bench," Georgieva said.

"What are the consequences of the world breaking into blocs? We are all going to be poorer, in poor countries and in rich countries," the IMF Managing Director said. The split into blocs will result in losing "a great deal of economic efficiency that has helped us to be richer," she noted.

"If we go to a point when we cut off parts of the world from each other it would be the poor in rich countries, and it would be the poor countries that would bear the brunt of the impact," Georgieva added.
