Putin aide lambasts dollar as "drug the entire world got hooked on"

Trust in the currency was undermined by huge mistakes in macroeconomic policy of Western countries in 2020-2021, Maxim Oreshkin pointed out

ST. PETERSBURG, June 17. /TASS/. The dollar has become a drug that the whole world has been addicted to, Maxim Oreshkin, presidential aide, said at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).

"I would say that the dollar is not a weapon. It is a drug that the entire world has been hooked on in terms of settlements, servicing the banking system and so on. Of course, giving up a drug is not an easy story. But understanding that it is a drug and it is not good, is now growing in the world, in most of the world," Oreshkin said.

According to him, trust in the currency was undermined by huge mistakes in macroeconomic policy of Western countries in 2020-2021. Confidence in the Western political system has been also undermined, Oreshkin added.

"We see that the political system in Western countries is now fragmented, society is fragmented. Unification of society is not happening. They wanted to isolate us, but through the loss of trust they isolate themselves," Oreshkin said.

"Russia will be an open economy. We have a lot of partners. Of course, in this new openness, it is a matter of building infrastructure: settlements, logistics and much more remains to be done now," the presidential aide said.

According to him, this infrastructure should be built on a new basis.

"Now we are trying to build this infrastructure through traditional channels: these are interbank relations, a currency that would be at the center of this model. But it seems to me that we will need to look at this whole story from a new angle. We should take out the function that should use the infrastructure, and implement it using new technological approaches," Oreshkin said.
