Rising fertilizer prices to lead to crop shortages, UN chief warns

This year’s food crisis is about lack of access, next year’s could be about lack of food, Antonio Guterres stressed

UNITED NATIONS, June 8. /TASS/. A spike in fertilizer prices triggered by the conflict in Ukraine may lead to crop shortages, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said at a briefing of the UN Global Crisis Response Group on Food, Energy and Finance on Wednesday.

"Food prices are at near record highs. Fertilizer prices have more than doubled, sounding an alarm everywhere. Without fertilizers, shortages will spread from corn and wheat to all staple crops, including rice, with a devastating impact on billions of people in Asia and South America. This year’s food crisis is about lack of access. Next year’s could be about lack of food," he noted.

Russia is one of the world’s largest potash fertilizer producers. The West’s sanctions on Moscow have reduced the country’s fertilizer exports.
