Loss of Mariupol plants entail loss of 50% of Ukraine’s steel and cast iron exports

Mariupol is the largest city on the Azov Sea coast, a large seaport and a key metallurgical center in Donbass

KIEV, May 15. /TASS/. Metallurgical works in Mariupol, in particular the Azovstal and Ilyich plants, accounted for up to a half of Ukraine’s exports of steel and cast iron, which are now lost, Ukraine’s Deputy Finance Minister Alexander Kava said on Sunday.

"Following the loss of Mariupol-based Azovstal and Ilyich works, Ukraine has lost half of the possibilities of its exports of steel and cast iron," Strana quoted him as saying. According to Kava, Ukraine has also lost capacities of processing iron ore and will have to export it unprocessed, which is also fraught with losses.

Mariupol is the largest city on the Azov Sea coast, a large seaport and a key metallurgical center in Donbass. Two large ferrous metallurgy works - the Ilyich metallurgical and Azovstal works - and the Azovmash machine-building plant are located in the city.

The battles for Mariupol erupted on February 25 and the city was totally blocked. In mid-April, more than 1,300 Ukrainian troops surrendered arms near the Ilyich pant. By now, the city’s merchant port has been liberated and Ukrainian nationalist formations have been driven out of Mariupol’s residential areas and are now holed up in Azovstal, blocked by Russian troops.
