Italian operator reports decrease in Russian gas supplies

Italy imported up to 29 bln cubic meters of gas from Russia per year, which accounted to roughly 40% of the total needs of the country

ROME, May 11. /TASS/. Data released on the website of the Italian energy infrastructure operator SNAM, which is involved in transportation of gas to the country, shows a decrease in Russian gas supplies through a station in Tarvisio (Italy’s north-east) compared with Tuesday, the ANSA news agency reported on Wednesday.

The decrease of flows in the north-east is offset by a large inflow to the center on the border with Switzerland, to which gas is supplied from Norway and the Netherlands, according to the report. No interruptions occurred in the Italian gas supply system, the agency noted.

Italy imported up to 29 bln cubic meters of gas from Russia per year, which accounted to roughly 40% of the total needs of the country.

On Tuesday, May 10, the Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine (GTSOU) said it would shut down transit of gas to Europe via the Sokhranovka station starting May 11 due to force majeure as the company could allegedly not control the Novopskov gas compressor station in the Lugansk Region. Consequently, transportation nominations will be rejected, with gas not to be accepted.

Ukraine’s state company on oil and natural gas production, transportation and refining Naftogaz of Ukraine also notified Gazprom that if gas supplies continued from the Russian side towards Sokhranovka the volumes at points of exit from the Ukrainian gas transportation system would be lowered, respectively.

However, the Russian gas holding did not see any grounds for suspension of pumping in the previous form, noting that it did not receive any confirmation of the force majeure circumstances. The company added that it was technologically impossible to shift all transit volumes to another interconnection point, the Sudzha gas distribution station in Russia’s Kursk Region.
