CAIRO, March 4. /TASS/. Reconstruction of the Gaza Strip will be possible without the resettlement of Palestinians, provided that Israel completely withdraws from the enclave, Ahmed Aboul-Gheit, the Secretary-General of the Arab League (LAS), stated at the opening of an emergency LAS summit in Egypt's new administrative capital. The event is being streamed by the Egyptian leader's office.
"The reconstruction of Gaza is achievable without displacing its people," he emphasized. "It can happen, if the guns fall silent and Israel withdraws entirely from the Strip. We appreciate all those who are working towards peace and reiterate our gratitude for the historic and ongoing role of the U.S. However, adopting unrealistic projects that lack a legal framework will only destabilize the region," Aboul-Gheit stressed.
During the current summit, LAS leaders are expected to review and approve the Egyptian plan for the reconstruction of the Palestinian enclave.
The Egyptian authorities began preparing their Gaza reconstruction plan after former U.S. President Donald Trump repeatedly suggested that Washington was considering long-term ownership of the Gaza Strip to facilitate its development for the sake of peace in the Middle East. He advocated for the resettlement of Palestinians from the enclave to other countries in the region, which he claimed could "pay the price." However, Arab nations, Iran, and several Western countries opposed Trump's idea and expressed strong objections to the proposal to deport Gazans.
