Suspect in car ramming incident in Mannheim identified as 40-year-old German man

The police believe the man was acting alone

BERLIN, March 3. /TASS/. The suspect in the car ramming incident in the city of Mannheim (federal state of Baden-Wurttemberg) in southwestern Germany has been identified as a 40-year-old German man from the neighboring state of Rhineland-Palatinate, the DPA agency said, citing the state interior minister of Baden-Wuerttemberg, Thomas Strobl.

According to Strobl, the man was detained and is now in hospital with injuries. The police believe he was acting alone.

A car rammed into a crowd in downtown Mannheim at about noon on Monday. According to the Bild newspaper, at least two people died and 14 more were injured. It has not yet been established whether it was an accident or an attack. Witnesses say that the car drove into the main pedestrian street in the city near the water tower and hit a group of people near the Galeria Kaufhof shopping mall. A carnival market was taking place nearby.

The police said the investigation is underway. However, no further details about the driver have been made public as of yet.
