Global South countries in Davos call for taking into account Russia’s concerns on Ukraine

In general, the partners of the Global South expressed sympathy with the Ukrainians and compassion for their sufferings, a high-ranking European Union says

BRUSSELS, January 14. /TASS/. Some countries of the Global South have called for taking into account Russia’s concerns as far as it comes to the Ukrainian settlement, a high-ranking European Union official said after a meeting on the "peace formula" in Davos.

"While the Global South partners generally expressed empathy with the fate of Ukrainians and their suffering, some highlighted the need for engaging with Russia’s concerns," he said, adding that among the delegates from the South were representatives from Brazil and South Africa, who were especially active during the discussions.

In all, some 83 delegations, including 18 from Asia and 12 from Africa, took part in the meeting.

"With an impressive line up of high level Ukrainian officials, the Ukrainian side presented the outcome of the working groups on a number of points of the peace plan - point 6 on withdrawal of Russian troops and cessation of hostilities; point 7 on justice; point 8 on the protection of the environment; point 9 on the prevention of escalation; and point 10 on the confirmation of the end of the war. Food security and humanitarian issues, including the abduction of UA children, were also discussed," he said. "Ukraine conceptualized the event and the work of the groups as an effort to prepare the future peace summit, which they would like to hold in the near future."

Russian President Vladimir Putin said earlier that Russian authorities had evacuated children from the conflict zone absolutely legally in a bid to save their lives and health and had never hampered their reunification with their families.

The EU source said the Ukraine’s Western partners "expressed unequivocal support to Ukraine and its peace plans, with a call on the Global South to make clear to Russia the importance of respecting the UN charter and its core principles in the interest of global security."

"The European Union reiterated its support for the principles of Zelensky’s ten-point peace plan and its commitment to continuing to support Ukraine for as long as it takes with confidence that the forthcoming European council would take the necessary decision on the 50 bln Euro economic support package," he added.

Davos hosted the fourth meeting of national security advisers on Ukraine’s "peace formula" on January 14. It was initiated by Switzerland and Ukraine. Three such meetings were held in 2023. The latest one took place in Malta on October 28-29, 2023.
