Washington’s ‘peace narrative’ illusory due to US’ hegemonic aspirations — Global Times

According to the article, the West regards itself as "spokesmen of the international community," while "demonizing other countries"

BEIJING, February 25. /TASS/. American claims of the importance of global peace and development are illusive due to the US’ aspiration for hegemony, according to an opinion piece published in China’s Global Times on Saturday.

"The narrative of ‘peace’ and ‘development’ has never been absent in US statement, but it has become an illusion in the US' pursuit of hegemony, and even become a tool to promote hegemony," Guan Guoping wrote.

According to him, the West has been developing various political concepts for decades serving a single goal of retaining the West’s stable hegemony.

"After the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the US and Europe provided military aid to Ukraine, and used their financial hegemony to impose the most severe economic and financial sanctions on Russia in history, including freezing hundreds of billions of dollars in Russian foreign exchange reserves and kicking Russia out of SWIFT. These moves did not bring Russia to its knees, but triggered drastic fluctuation in international energy and financial markets," the article says.

The author pointed out that the US privatized and weaponized the global financial system in order to use it against its rivals.

Demonizing other countries

The author thinks that the US and the West regard themselves as "spokesmen of the international community." They "are accustomed to labeling some countries with discriminatory labels such as ‘Evil Empire, ‘Axis of Evil,’ ‘Rogue State’ and ‘Failed State’ in order to distinguish the so-called ‘civilized self’ from ‘the savage others’," he noted.

"While demonizing other countries, they regard themselves as the moral arbiter of the world; in front of the scenes it is about ‘freedom and democracy,’ and behind the scenes is the ambition of unending hegemony," the author explained. In this context, he noted that some Western politicians described the Ukrainian conflict as an "epic" of "democracy versus autocracy."

The columnist asserts that the US and the West impose their will on the rest of the world creating institutes and norms that serve their interests and ensure their supremacy.

The article notes that NATO falsely accuses China of challenging "NATO's interests, security and values," and joining "forces with Russia to ‘undermine the rules-based international order’."
