Hungary will not let EU make decisions worsening conflict in Ukraine — MFA

The EU foreign ministers plan to make an official decision on Monday on the launch of an EU mission to train 15,000 Ukrainian soldiers

BUDAPEST, November 14. /TASS/. Hungary intends to prevent the EU foreign ministers meeting in Brussels from making decisions that might lead to an escalation of the Ukrainian conflict and harm Europe's energy supply, Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto said on Monday.

The goal today is to prevent unreasonable decisions that would lead to an escalation of hostilities [in Ukraine] and further jeopardize Europe’s energy supply, Szijjarto wrote on his Facebook page (banned in Russia, belongs to the Meta corporation, recognized as extremist in Russia).

The EU foreign ministers plan to make an official decision on Monday on the launch of an EU mission to train 15,000 Ukrainian soldiers. A fundamental decision to this effect was made at a ministerial meeting in Luxembourg on 17 October. The mission is designed for two years; 106.7 million euros is to be allocated for these purposes. Ukrainian military personnel are to be trained in Poland and Germany.

Hungary stated from the outset that it would not participate in this initiative, nor would it provide any funding. Szijjarto then abstaining from voting. He said that he did not consider such a mission a good idea, since it would merely lead to an escalation of the military conflict in Ukraine. Also, the Hungarian government recently firmly opposed the adoption of new EU sanctions against Russia, which might affect the energy sector.
