Turkey reiterates readiness to mediate Russia-Ukraine peace, Erdogan says

The Turkish president emphasized that his country would "keep up resolute and sincere efforts to have the crisis between the two neighboring countries resolved and to achieve peace"

ANKARA, April 28. /TASS/. Ankara is ready to mediate peace between Russia and Ukraine, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reiterated in a phone call on Thursday with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

"President Erdogan reiterated [Turkey] was ready to take the initiative in ending the war between Russia and Ukraine and mediate peace. Erdogan pushed for sustainable peace in the region as soon as possible by intensifying the impulse from the negotiations held in Istanbul," the Turkish president’s office told reporters. The Turkish president emphasized that his country would "keep up resolute and sincere efforts to have the crisis between the two neighboring countries resolved and to achieve peace."

Russia and Ukraine have been in talks since February 28, with the Russian delegation headed by Kremlin aide Vladimir Medinsky. After a number of meetings in Belarus, the sides continued communication by video link. On March 29, a face-to-face meeting was held in Istanbul, and on April 12, Russian President Vladimir Putin told reporters that Kiev had deadlocked the talks by back-pedaling on the agreements reached during the round in Turkey.
