CHISINAU, April 1. /TASS/. A court in Chisinau rejected a motion from prosecutors to arrest the head of Moldova's Gagauzia region, Evghenia Gutsul, in a second criminal case that concerns election campaign funds for the 2023 vote in the region.
According to the judge, the motion, which sought a 30-day arrest, was unfounded. The judge pointed to the fact that Gutsul had already been arrested for 20 days in another case.
Moldova’s anti-corruption prosecutor’s office plans to appeal the decision.
Gutsul said the charges are contrived and blamed Moldovan President Maia Sandu for ordering her persecution. All opposition factions in the Moldovan legislature came to the defense of Gutsul, accusing the government of building a dictatorship. People in Gagauzia have been rallying to demand her release.
Gutsul was detained in the Chisinau airport on March 25, and a court on March 28 ruled to arrest her for 20 days.
