Expert: Use of metal containers in Arctic must be outlawed for ecology reasons

Waste processing in the Arctic must feature boilers with automatic furnaces, which could be fueled by waste of various origins, including solid household, municipal and industrial waste

MOSCOW, March 3. /TASS/. Metal barrels must be banned for bringing into the Russian Arctic zone since they cannot be taken back thus affecting the ecology, the GazEnergoStroy Corporation’s President Sergey Chernin said.

"A big problem is <…> metal barrels," he said at the Arctic: Sustainable Development 7th international conference. "Our opinion is that the country must outlaw deliveries in metal containers."

All supplies could be transported in plastic barrels, he continued, stressing they could be recycled. The Russian Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology has been working on a ban to use metal containers, he added.

Waste processing in the Arctic must feature boilers with automatic furnaces, which could be fueled by waste of various origins, including solid household, municipal and industrial wastes, the corporation’s presentation read.

"When using the technologies and equipment from the GazEnergoStroy Corporation, clients do not need solid-waste dumps in hard-to-reach settlements, where it is economically unreasonable for local operators to collect and transport the waste," the presentation read. "The offered complex recycles fully (up to 90%) the waste into liquid fuel, heat and secondary materials."

The GazEnergoStroy Corporation implements complex infrastructure projects, including construction of generating facilities. The corporation offers services in energy audit, design, personnel training, spare parts supplies, maintenance, in elimination of accumulated damage, and waste management projects.
