Russia to present Era-Glonass road accident response system in China — official

The system is designed to reduce the emergency services' arrival time at the scene by 30% on average by using modern navigation, telecommunication and information technologies

HUANGSHAN/China/, June 20. /TASS/. Russia’s State Space Corporation Roscosmos and JSC Glonass will present in China in the coming months their Era-Glonass road accident emergency response system. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin told reporters on Monday after a meeting of the Russian-Chinese intergovernmental commission on the preparation of regular meetings of the heads of government that the parties may also establish joint production of sensors for this system.

"Separately I’d like to mention cooperation in the sphere of space navigation - it is being actively promoted. Today we have agreed to hold in China a presentation of our Era-Glonass project", he said.

"It [the presentation] will be held soon. Today [Vice-Premier of the Chinese State Council] Wang Yang confirmed the invitation to the delegation of the Glonass JSC and Roscosmos experts to show how it all works and, therefore, we can establish joint production of Era-Glonass sensors for use both in Russia and China. The presentation will take place in the coming months", Rogozin said.

"In addition, Russian-Chinese cooperation in the field of aircraft and space navigation is also very useful for monitoring transport routes. When cargoes are moved in transit through Russia, the navigation sensors can instantly show the location of a particular container, and it may be of interest to both the sender and recipient of these cargoes," the Russian deputy prime minister said.

Commercial operation of the Era-Glonass system began in 2015, the first real call was recorded on January 23, 2016. The system is designed to reduce the emergency services' (police, rescue services) arrival time at the scene by 30% on average through utilizing modern navigation, telecommunication and information technologies.

The ground-based Era-Glonass navigation information infrastructure is built to serve all roads in the country, and vehicles equipped with Glonass/GPS navigation communication terminals (at the factory or a certified service center). In event of a traffic accident, the terminal will automatically collect data on its exact location, time and severity, and transmit it with a high-priority alert to an Era-Glonass operator. Once verified, this information is passed on to the emergency response services (the 1-1-2 System or duty police stations). Vehicle driver and passengers can also contact an Era-Glonass operator manually - by pressing a special button.

According to experts, this system will make it possible to save thousands of lives annually. Starting 2017, all the vehicles manufactured in the territory of the Customs Union will be equipped with this system’s terminals.
