Russia urges parties to Nagorno-Karabakh conflict to implement trilateral agreements

Russia is highly concerned about rising tensions in Nagorno-Karabakh, the Russian Foreign Ministry said

MOSCOW, March 26. /TASS/. Moscow urges the parties to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict to exercise restraint and ensure compliance with the trilateral agreements that were reached by the leaders of Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Saturday.

"We urge the parties to exercise restraint and ensure strict compliance with the existing trilateral agreements reached at the highest level," the statement reads.

"We are highly concerned about rising tensions in Nagorno-Karabakh. The incidents of armed infiltration into the zone of responsibility of Russian peacekeepers that the Russian Defense Ministry reported in its information bulletin on March 26, 2022, as well as ceasefire violations, run counter to the statements that the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia adopted on November 9, 2020," the statement added.

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, "Russian peacekeepers maintain contact with both parties, taking the necessary measures to ease tensions in the region."

The Russian Defense Ministry said earlier on Saturday that the Azerbaijani Armed Forces had violated the trilateral statement on March 24-25, entering the zone of responsibility of Russian peacekeepers and conducting four attacks involving a Bayraktar TB2 drone, which targeted Nagorno-Karabakh’s armed forces near the Furukh settlement. On March 24, Armenia reported that the Azerbaijani army had invaded the Parukh settlement in the Askeran district of Nagorno-Karabakh. Military activities continued in the area on March 25.

Renewed clashes between Azerbaijan and Armenia erupted on September 27, 2020, with intense battles raging in the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh. On November 9, 2020, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan signed a joint statement on a complete ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh. According to the document, Azerbaijan and Armenia maintained the positions that they had held, while a number of districts were handed over to Baku and Russian peacekeepers were deployed along the line of contact and the Lachin Corridor.
