Russia, Egypt reach understanding on payments for 2015 attack victims’ families — diplomat

MOSCOW, September 16. /TASS/. Russia and Egypt have reached principled understanding about compensations for families of the victims in the 2015 plane crash that took place over the Sinai Peninsula, the details are being worked out now, spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova said in a statement on Thursday.

"During the talks with the Egyptian side, the topic of payments to the families of the Russian citizens who died in the terror attack has been consistently paid attention to by the Russian Foreign Ministry. There was constant contact with associations of the families of killed passengers and crewmembers, particularly the Reys 9268 charity foundation. As a result of these efforts, the Russian embassy in Cairo managed to reach a principled understanding with the Egyptian partners on this issue," the statement reads.

Specific details for the payments are being worked on now.

Flights between Russia and Egypt had been fully suspended in November 2015 after a passenger plane operated by Russia’s Kogalymavia airline travelling from Sharm El Sheikh to St. Petersburg exploded over the Sinai Peninsula, killing all 217 passengers and seven crewmembers on board. The FSB qualified the incident as a terror attack.
