Argentina's president-elect backtracks from comments about transition to dollar

"The currency will be the one that the Argentinean people choose," Javier Milei pointed out

BUENOS AIRES, November 20. /TASS/. Argentine President-elect Javier Milei said the country will not necessarily use the dollar instead of its national currency after implementing his planned reforms.

"My decision is to do away with the central bank. The currency will be the one that the Argentinean people choose. Yes, there is an operational issue of what currency you will work with, but this is a secondary issue," he said on Mitre radio.

On November 19, the second round of presidential elections took place in Argentina. Milei, a libertarian MP running for the right-wing Freedom Advances alliance, defeated Economy Minister Sergio Massa.

Milei, an economist by trade, is a proponent of minimal government interference in daily life. According to the politician, to solve the problem of inflation in the country, which will exceed 140% this year, it is necessary to liquidate the central bank and deprive the state of the ability to print money when there is a shortage of budget funds. Milei also plans to seriously cut government spending.
