Haikou Airport in Hainan to open new international routes

The airport will open flights to Vientiane, Moscow, Jeddah and other cities

HAIKOU /China/, August 24. /TASS/. Meilan International Airport in the Chinese city of Haikou (Hainan Province) plans to open new international routes to meet the demand for international passenger flights, the Hainan Daily newspaper reported with reference to the airport’s administration representative.

The airport plans to launch flights to such cities as Vientiane, Luang Prabang, Kuala Lumpur, Moscow, Jeddah, as well as other destinations. The frequency of flights has already been increased on certain routes.

This includes passenger flights between Haikou and the the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Between August 15 to 29, the number of flights on this route was increased to 21 per week. This is due to the need to meet the demand for flights during the summer vacation season. Additional flights were organized on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

n early December 2021, Meilan International Airport's new second terminal was put into operation. Its total area amounted to nearly 300 thousand square meters. The terminal is equipped with 110 check-in counters, automatic check-in and baggage drop-off counters, and advanced equipment, including facial recognition technology, which will speed up the passenger service process. All necessary transport infrastructure has been installed, and a parking lot for 3.7 thousand cars on an area of about 170 thousand square meters has been equipped.

The expansion of Meilan Airport is an important part of the project to build a free trade port in the province, as air transportation accounts for the bulk of passenger and cargo traffic. As part of the second phase of that project, new runways totaling 3.6 kilometers were built, as well as a second terminal. RMB 17.8 billion (about $2.5 billion) was invested in the construction of the new infrastructure.

All the new infrastructure will increase the total annual passenger traffic to 45 million people and the volume of cargo traffic to 600,000 tons. It is also planned to increase international passenger traffic from 8 million to 10 million people annually.
