DUSHANBE, October 9. /TASS/. Russia is one of Tajikistan's main political and economic partners, the Central Asian nation’s President Emomali Rahmon said during expanded talks between the two countries’ delegations in Dushanbe.
"Russia is one of Tajikistan’s political and economic partners. We actively cooperate in the trade, economic, cultural and humanitarian fields. Many issues are resolved through the work of our intergovernmental commission," he pointed out.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is on a state visit to Tajikistan on October 8-9. While in Dushanbe, he will also take part in the second Russia-Central Asia Summit on Thursday, and in a meeting of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) Council of Heads of State on Friday.
Russia-Tajikistan relations
Russia and Tajikistan have signed over 200 bilateral agreements in various fields of cooperation since diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on April 8, 1992. In September, Putin sent a congratulatory message to Rahmon on the 34th anniversary of Tajikistan’s independence, highlighting the successful development of strategic partnership and allied relations between Moscow and Dushanbe. He also expressed confidence in the further strengthening of cooperative ties.
According to Russia’s Federal Customs Service, Tajikistan’s share in Russia’s total foreign trade turnover stands at 0.2%. In contrast, Russia is one of the country’s biggest trading partners, accounting for over 20% of its foreign trade. According to the Tajik authorities, bilateral trade exceeded $1.4 billion between January and August 2025, rising by 13%. Last year, Russia-Tajik trade reached $1.9%, a 15% increase from 2023.
Putin said following talks with Rahmon at the Kremlin in March that Moscow and Dushanbe were working to increase bilateral trade 2.5-fold by 2030.
