Top Spanish diplomat says premature to talk about peacekeepers in Ukraine

"Spain has never turned its back on a real peacekeeping mission," Jose Manuel Albares said

MADRID, March 3. /TASS/. It is premature to talk about the hypothetical deployment of peacekeepers in Ukraine, Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares said.

"Spain has never turned its back on a real peacekeeping mission," the diplomat said in an interview with the Telecinco TV channel. "It seems premature to me to talk about a peacekeeping force [in Ukraine] when there is still no peace and when we still don't know if what some call peace is just a ceasefire," the top diplomat added.

The Financial Times reported, citing sources, that during a visit to Washington on February 24, French President Emmanuel Macron failed to persuade his US counterpart Donald Trump to commit to supporting the deployment of European troops in Ukraine once the conflict is resolved. Trump had previously said he would not oppose the deployment of European peacekeepers in Ukraine. At the same time, the US administration said that the participation of the US contingent was ruled out.
