Syrian politicians call for cessation of hostilities in republic

The statement also supports "implementation of clearly outlined and transparently announced steps towards security, civil peace, and freedoms"

DUBAI, December 12. /TASS/. A number of Syria's politicians have called for a cessation of fighting, citing security breaches in some of the country's regions, according to a statement obtained by TASS.

"We call for a cessation of hostilities throughout Syrian territory and the implementation of clearly outlined and transparently announced steps towards security, civil peace, and freedoms. These measures aim to counter the fear and anxiety that have arisen among people due to recent violations and activities that contradict the announced course," the statement reads. It was signed, among others, by representatives of the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party, the Syrian Communist Party (Unified), the Syrian Social Nationalist Party, and a number of independent Syrian politicians.

After seizing power in Damascus, Syrian armed opposition leader Ahmed al-Sharaa pledged to ensure the unity of Syria's territory and to preserve state institutions, the statement said. Al-Sharaa also stated that the new authorities in Syria would respect the rights of all ethno-religious groups and prohibit incitement to inter-religious strife.

On November 27, Syria’s armed opposition launched a large-scale offensive against government forces in the provinces of Aleppo and Idlib. By the evening of December 7, President Bashar Assad’s opponents had seized several major cities, including Aleppo, Hama, Daraa, and Homs. On December 8, they entered Damascus, while the army withdrew from the Syrian capital. Assad resigned and left the country. On December 10, Mohammed al-Bashir, who had led the so-called Syrian Salvation Government in the Idlib Province since January 2024, announced his appointment as head of Syria’s interim government until March 1, 2025.
