MOSCOW, March 6. /TASS/. Ukrainian blogger Anatoly Shariy claims that he and his wife have been the targets of an assassination attempt in Spain.
"Someone has just tried to kill me and my wife; they tried to fire a machine gun with a silencer at our car," Shariy said in a video posted on Telegram.
The blogger claims that, "less than a week ago, Spanish law enforcement officials received information about preparations for an assassination attempt." "Moreover, there were names, faces and so on. And today, the assassination attempt took place," he reported.
Shariy is wanted in Ukraine, where he faces life imprisonment on charges of high treason and violations of citizens' equality filed by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU).
For the past several years, the blogger has been living in Spain. In 2022, he was detained in the EU country at the request of the Ukrainian authorities. However, a Spanish court announced in October 2022 that the government had not received extradition files in Shariy’s case, which was eventually dropped.
This is not the first incident involving Shariy in Spain. On October 24, 2023, unidentified persons threw petrol bombs inside the blogger’s house in the province of Tarragona. No one was hurt but police launched an investigation. Spain’s El Pais newspaper reported afterwards that Shariy had earlier received numerous threats. According to the paper, "Ukrainian neo-Nazi groups" publicly threatened the blogger.
