Political infighting erupts in Cape Verde following Zelensky's unsanctioned visit

Cape Verdean President Jose Maria Neves considered the meeting, which took place without his knowledge, a sign of a "power struggle" in the country and criticized the government for "institutional disloyalty" in foreign policy issues

PRETORIA, December 12. /TASS/. The December 10 meeting between Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and Cape Verdean Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva did not please President Jose Maria Neves, resulting in an internal political crisis in the country, with the country's leader promising to take action on the matter, the RFI radio station reported.

"I was deeply surprised by this meeting, I will clarify this issue and take appropriate measures," said the president, quoted by the radio station.

The leader considered the meeting, which took place without his knowledge, a sign of a "power struggle" in the country and criticized the government for "institutional disloyalty" in foreign policy issues.

The meeting between the Cape Verdean prime minister and the Ukrainian president took place at the Amilcar Cabral International Airport, as Zelensky was en route to the inauguration of Argentine leader Javier Milei.
